I know the Olympic Committee figures out where the future Olympics are going to be held years in advance, here’s my question: Why Beijing?
China’s history with human rights is horrid. Beijing’s air is about as clean as the wheels on a vacuum cleaner. And to top it all off, their government hates the world and freedom. Sites like Facebook can’t exist in China because it would give the people too much self expression.
I understand that they’re an upcoming world power but couldn’t we find a better place in the world for the 2008 summer Olympics? Maybe Latvia or Idaho? Maybe Switzerland? They’re peaceful.
Doesn’t it scare anyone that China controls the weather in certain situations? They send planes up to fly through the sky with some kind of liquid nitrogen to diffuse the rain clouds. That’s fucking weird! You don’t mess with nature like that!
Athletes need air. China doesn’t like (clean) air. Shouldn’t the Olympic Committee have picked some place that was maybe a little cleaner or less politically questionable? The Olympics is about nations competing in sports, not competing for airtime on CNN because they’re the best athlete in whatever sport and now they’re refusing to compete, in protest. That should never be an issue!
So looking back, was Beijing really a smart choice? I don’t think so. Give China 20 or 24 years to clean their air up and a few more years so they can loosen up a bit, then we can talk about putting the world’s best atheletes there. Well, I guess not unless someone calls off the Olympics in the next two days. But Beijing, really?! Poor choice.
